UK Equipment Buyers Get Ready for 3rd Plantworx

Plantworx is the UK’s biggest construction machinery exhibition. It is run by the Construction Equipment Association, the organisation that represents the manufacturers.

It was held for the first time in 2013, with 260 exhibitors, then again in 2015, with 344 exhibitors. The 3rd Plantworx takes place 6th to 8th June 2017 with more than 350 exhibitors confirmed. As in 2015, the 2017 show is at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire and includes demonstration areas for showing machines digging, lifting and loading, as well as company booths with static machines all polished and posed.

Somewhat inconveniently for the organisers, 8th June is also the day that UK prime minister Theresa May has called a general election, so many people may be faced with having to choose between casting their vote or keeping abreast of the latest construction equipment technologies.

One Plantworx exhibitor with a special significance this time is the French manufacturer Mecalac. Mecalac has not traditionally been a big name in the UK construction machinery industry, but in December 2016 it acquired Terex’s compact construction equipment business, based in Coventry. This immediately made Mecalac one of the most important players in the UK. It has work to do to make its brand name more familiar to UK buyers and Plantworx is a great place to start.

The manufacturing business that Mecalac bought from Terex includes Massey Ferguson and Fermec backhoe loader heritage as well as Benford dumper trucks – all grand old names of UK construction machinery manufacturing that live on only in memories.

Plantwork 2017 therefore represents a major opportunity for the new Mecalac Construction Equipment UK Ltd to show what big plans it has for its Coventry operations. Machines on show, such as the new TLB870 backhoe loader and the established TA9SP site dumper, will fundamentally be Terex designs, but it will surely not be very long before Mecalac starts to put its own stamp on the product line.

plantworx ukJCB remains the biggest brand in UK construction machinery. At Plantworx 2017 it will give a British show debut to its 540-180 HiViz Loadall telehandler and its innovative skid steer loader with a telescopic boom – the JCB Teleskid.

Many of the big international names will also be exhibiting at Plantworx, including such familiar names as Atlas Copco, Ausa, Bomag, Cat, Hilti, Manitou, Merlo, Takeuchi and Volvo.

The Doosan Bobcat booth will feature the new 21-tonne DX225LC-5 crawler excavator,  16.5-tonne DX165W-5 short tail wheeled excavator, Bobcat E17Z Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) mini excavator and the Bobcat T40.180SLP and T36.120SL rigid frame telehandlers.  Doosan and Bobcat products will also be put through their paces in the demonstration area.

Mini excavators can also be found on the Kubota stand, including the new four-tonne KX042-4 and the KX080-4a, an enhanced version of the popular KX080-4 with an optional two-piece boom for expanded working range.

Similarly, Case will have its new C Series mini excavators on show, along with the mid-size CX75C and CX80C up to the heavy range D Series CX130D, CX245D SR, and CX290D MH, as well as the 1150M dozer, plus a 690ST backhoe loader and a TR270 compact tracked loader.
